Leyna continues to be super active and growing bigger (me along with her). I must admit, just these last weeks have been quite challenging since I've been hit hard with severe hip pain that make it difficult to do the littlest things...pick up my legs, walk, get in the car, go upstairs, even roll over in bed...it's a reason why delivering her any day now is fine with me! Meanwhile, Dan is doing an excellent job helping me every step of the way (literally). I've certainly mastered the art of waddling like penguin...the last nurse I saw was quite entertained by it, so I'm glad I could give her a laugh!

The goal this week is to get the birthplan finalized, labor bags packed, get the car seat base ready to go, order last minute stuff online (since to no surprise, there's still things difficult to find out here), get all her clothes ready, start working on the baby announcement...and of course enjoy each day of rest and every night of sleep until she arrives! There's really not much to the nursery yet since shipping the crib here can take up to 6 months at the latest...so we're waiting and hoping it comes much sooner! Nesting her room is on standby...

So far we've attended the hospital's Labor & Delivery class and got a tour of the facilities - fortunately we're here after a lot of renovations have taken place. We've been hearing positive feedback about the doctors, birthing experience and receiving other helpful information from people who delivered here recently, so that's always reassuring. We still have a Baby Boot Camp class coming up July 9 that will inform us on parenting basics of what to do after delivery...so we'll see if we make it, before we're at the post delivery stage!

Baby Showers Galore

This is quite a lengthy post, partly way overdue and partly new...I’ve been blessed to celebrate not only one baby shower with friends and family back in the states before leaving, but another baby shower with our new friends here in Okinawa! Yesterday the JAG wives threw me a surprise baby shower. Sooo nice of them to go out of their way for someone they've only met recently - what a wonderful welcome to the island and the JAG family! So I thought now is a great time to share some pics from both baby showers. Huge thanks to everyone for all that they've done to help us soon-to-be parents gear up for Leyna’s arrival.

I’ll start with Stateside Baby Shower held back in April...Dan’s parents graciously hosted the party in their wonderful home which accommodated the event so well. We ate tons of our favorite delicious food (Alice's lumpia, Grandma’s pancit, Mrs. Chin’s chinese chicken salad, Kalbi, Almond jello cocktail, JJ Bakery Cake…just to name a few), was entertained by some hilarious games, and most importantly, enjoyed the company of our closest friends and family.
We were so caught up in the fun, we hardly took any photos ourselves. So pretty much all the pics we have are from others' cameras. I'm sure there's lots of photos floating around somewhere, so if you happen to have any more pics of the event, we'd love to have a copy! =D
Games included the low key "Identify the Baby Animal" worksheet...to an action-packed "It Takes Two" which required pairs to work together using only one hand each to change a diaper and dress a baby doll...and a tie-breaker of one blindfolded person feeding the partner a bottle of baby food (apparently the "not so yummy" kind)...but clearly the dressing aspect was by far more difficult than expected! Then there was the taste bud twister "Guess the Baby Food" where people had to decipher a variety of 10 baby foods. And of course the "Bottles Up" game for the guys to chug as much juice as possible through slow flow bottles, and without using their hands. Definitely entertaining with many laugh-til-you-cry moments, and everyone was such a good sport!
Later with our friends who hung around late, we played in the "Guess the Girth" of my belly game using string. Howie won, but he may have had an unfair advantage being that he has a talent to push out his belly just as far and be able to measure that! haha.
I made a board for people to guess the actual delivery date, time, height, and weight of Leyna, and whoever is the closest is going to be mailed a prize. There's still time to play, so email us your guess if you'd like!Opening gifts is always a joy. Let's hope the thank-you cards get to everyone before its time to send out the delivery announcement!
Arigato! Don't forget the parting gift. It was a super fun design project for Ila and I. Thank goodness she hand-wrapped all the chopsticks in a kimono-style pocket for me while I was away in R.I. with Dan! phew! And yay for my cousin's Cricut machine to help me cut out all those tags!
Overall we had a wonderful time before departing to Okinawa. We sure had a packed suitcase dedicated just for Leyna. And now we fast forward to the Okinawa Baby shower...

I was tricked into thinking I was being picked up simply for lunch with Tonya and Sasha. Little did I know, we headed straight to Sasha's place for an intimate time with the ladies...enjoying so many yummy home-made finger foods and delicious desserts. Tonya made a big diaper cake (something we couldn't have at the first shower since it'd be so hard to pack!), and once again, gifts are a joy! The great thing is that despite the first shower, everything I got were still things we needed. And on top of it all, everyone (even a few more who couldn't attend) all pitched in for a much larger gift! Boy we are thankful to cross something else off our "to buy" list. Here's some photos with the gals...though I somehow neglected to take a pic together with Sasha who planned everything! Doh!
I was already well satisfied with the afternoon, yet was again surprised when after desserts, we headed out to a popular place nearby for some pampering. Nothing like sipping cold iced tea in comfy recliners and getting oh-so-relaxing foot massages. We all got pedicures, but certainly not ordinary ones. As you can see, the choices for these intricately hand painted designs are endless as we perused huge binders and samples. The gals left to right..Sasha, Bryn, Ginger in the background, and Tonya (our sponsor).
I know feet aren't the greatest things to look at but I couldn't resist capturing the progress of these mini art-pieces. I was amazed they were even able to fit flowers on my all my super tiny toenails. Everyone got very different designs. We were all so happy how they turned out.
A swell way to start the week indeed. Dan of course was pleased that the wives took such good care of me. It's always nice to get pampered...and especially at the start of my 35th week of my growing belly!

A Few More Pics

...and just a few more pics from Memorial Weekend. Danno n Chris having fun exploring. Good thing they have each other to be adventurous with while Bryn and I are on baby duty! Chris has a DSLR (on my To Buy list) which comes in handy to capture such a pretty island.
Our first time in the Oki sand. And I don't seem to have very many belly pics, so here's a good shot of 33 weeks of Leyna growing =) Thanx for the pic Chris!

Memorial Weekend Recap

It was the first "96" (4 day weekend) since being here and our schedule was pretty much set before I even realized it was a holiday weekend...Friday: some "Mando-Fun" (mandatory fun) outing with all the JAGs at Tonneau - dubbed "the Barrel Restaurant" since the building itself is shaped like a giant keg. I don't think I've seen sashimi and sushi pieces cut so big n thick. I would have taken a photo, but it wasn't on my plate =) ...Saturday: after running around doing more home shopping, we had a dinner date with a couple Danno met when we first arrived. Home cooked meals are always delicious. Since we've been here, eating Kobe steaks is a regular, wonderfully delicious thing. Even for me who's on the pregger diet, I can actually still enjoy this steak when it's cooked well-done! ...Sunday: church as usual and more resting, shopping, etc ... Finally Monday: was our first time to get out and explore the coast a bit. We've been doing so much browsing in stores on our free time, it was nice to be outside for once! We went with Chris and Bryn, whom we've become great friends with. Danno and Chris endured NJS together. Bryn went along with Chris to Newport and delivered their first baby Braddock around graduation. So we're looking forward to watching Leyna and Braddock grow up together out here!

We didn't plan to stay the whole day, so rather than a white sandy beach, we went to explore a great snorkeling/diving spot...a bit hard to find and off the beaten path. It was a great place...not so many people...good for kids since theres lots of shallow areas for them to snorkel in...just TONS to explore. Here's some pics...

You see Danno in the distance? Funny because the moment we got there, he gets a work phone call. Yes, working on holidays can be so tough...but in this setting, sure doesn't look like one of those days!
There's tide pools everywhere. Watch where you step! Its amazing how many creatures are in there. Fish, crabs, sea urchins...and I've never seen so many black sea cucumbers! So many neat spots. Look in the water, the place is like sea cucumber heaven. ew haha. Lots of cool rock formations scattered around.
The ocean out where you snorkel the deeper waters is a good distance away. I didn't venture quite as far as the guys. Later they even went swimming around in some caves...on my To-Do list later.
Our favorite discovery of the day, just behind one of the rocks...Some deeper waters with bright blue lil fish and coral...
Fun day. Definitely a place we'll come back to!
